Abstract

This paper aims to compare between the available interpretations of two Qur’anic verses, seeking to demonstrate that some of the interpretations are plausible, while the others are untenable, in line with principles of modern linguistics. The plausible interpretations receive support from new linguistic analyses that are based on a new approach to the meanings derived from the phrases that include the relevant words. The paper shows that the phrase dābbatun mina l-ʼar a creature from the earth and the phrase dābbatu l-ʼar a creature of the earth (earthworm), in another verse, do not have the same meaning, contra the opinion of a contemporary scholar. As for the second verse, the paper argues that the phrase māʼin dāfiq ‘gushing water/liquid’ does not have the same meaning as the commonly confused phrase māʼu r-rajul mans water/liquid. The paper supports the correct interpretations with independent evidence. Therefore, the paper aims to apply the relevant modern linguistic principles on Quranic verses, seeking to analyze them and provide new and insightful interpretations for them, interpretations that do not contradict the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunnah.
